JCS Butterfly Stories

Wahl Wall Installation - San Diego, CA
Tasha Wahl asked me if I'd help her paint a butterfly on December 23rd at the Embassy Suites hotel in downtown SD. Of course, I said yes. While there, I learned that this butterfly was in honor of Duston Haywood. Two years ago Duston was hit by a semi truck while biking to work. You'd never know it by looking at him now, but he has started a walk, to be held on January 14th (two years to the day after the accident) at 7:45 a.m. (To 8:45 a.m.) in Mission Bay. He is calling his project "Celebrate Life's Beauty" and is replacing a bad memory with a positive memory. This is his second walk and the butterfly we just painted will be displayed at the hotel for 3+ months--as well as our JCS mobile butterfly will be at the end of the walk on the 14th. If you're interested in Celebrating Life's Beauty, you can sign up to join the walk. There is a $25 donation--and details are on Facebook under both the Butterfly Effect and Celebrate Life's Beauty! #bethechange. #grateful #celebratemiracles - Jennifer Cauzza

Over the summer, William and Ethan began a joint venture, N. Brothers Magic Show, raising money to support Every Mother Counts. Their mission began when their ice skating coach, Jonathan, experienced a family tragedy. Jonathan's sister-in-law was due to welcome their first baby into the family, the first born grandchild on both side of the families, Cecilia. The baby was born healthy with strong APGAR score. However, her health began to deteriorate 40 minutes later and passed away in her mother's arm. The boys asked if they could send the family flowers and card. Jonathan's family was touched by their kindness but requested that rather than spending money on flowers which will wilt, they would rather have the money donated to a charity where it would go into research and development to save other families from heartaches like theirs. Over the summer, they put together several magic shows on our drive way and raised over $200 for the Every Mother Counts foundation. Then, when Ethan found the Butterfly, his immediate thought was to continue to contribute to EMC. To date, they have contributed an equivalent of medical aide and supplies to save 14 pairs of mother and child. That is an impact on 14 families that get to have a blissful birthing experience with their love ones.

Wahl Wall Installation - Encinitas, CA
The Wahl Wall installation was up in Encinitas for just a short time, but it had a big impact. Tasha Wahl painted this butterfly with the help of her friends to benefit local charities during the Bro-Am event July 8-9, 2016. Funds were donated to local charities for every picture posted on social media with these hashtags: #BroAm #ButterflyEffect. |

Guess what -- Jared and I found this week's "Butterfly"! Email was down this morning so it wasn't until later this afternoon when email came back up that I was able to see the final photo clues. I knew exactly where it was (La Jolla Shores) because it's one of my favorite places to sit and work but I couldn't get out there because I had to wait and pick Jared up from school. I picked him up and we raced (okay, drove "expediently") out there. We went right to the spot and couldn't find it! We spent about a half-hour looking for it and I assumed that it had blown away or someone had taken it. I was so bummed but I didn't want to give up.
A little girl saw me and her dad came over and asked me if I was looking for something. I told him yes and then his little girl showed me the butterfly. She had found it, thought it had been left over from a party, and was playing with it. I told the little girl and her parents about the Butterfly drop and the Butterfly Effect. They also saw that I was wearing a JCS t-shirt so the little girl's parents asked about JCS and of course we had a long conversation about JCS and charter schools and education in general! They were very interested and said that they plan to explore the possibility of enrolling their ninth-grade son at JCS.
Jared and I took a photo with the beautiful "Class of 2016" Butterfly. The little girl looked broken-hearted that she wouldn't be able to continue playing with the butterfly so I let her keep it. She was overjoyed! I guess that's the Butterfly Effect at work. I asked if the donation could be made to the Down Syndrome Association of San Diego.
All in all, a good day.

Hello!
I found the butterfly today!
The place that I would like the donation to be made requires a backstory: Last week, our staff had just finished state testing and Alysson Bowden was very excited to go find the butterfly. She knew that it was at the Temecula Duck Pond and literally raced off of campus to go find it. We all wished her luck as she went on her way. A few minutes later, I get a text with this picture in it: (Keep reading below)
Her sad face for not finding the butterfly had been on my mind all week. When I saw the pictures of the butterfly this week, I raced to go find it!
If possible, I would like to split the donation with Alysson Bowden in honor of her valiant effort to find the butterfly last week. I would like half of the donation to go to a charity in Africa called "Empowering Lives" that equips the poor to live sustainable lives (empoweringlives.org). I would like Alysson Bowden to determine where the other half of the donation goes.
Friendship truly is magical!
Have a great weekend!

SDCCT's butterfly found by Jes Selby was donated back to SDCCT---the students had a discussion on whether to keep that money and do something for the academy or give it away. As a group, they decided to give it to City of Refuge San Diego--because one of our students was so grateful for their support during his family's time of need.
I wanted to pass these photos along to you so you could see what some of the middle school students did last week for the holidays out here in Pine Valley.
I wanted to do some kind of community service type project with my students during this holiday time and after Becky Sharp and I started brainstorming we decided to make baby blankets with the kids to donate to a local organization in San Diego. The organization is called Gently Hugged and they create baskets during the holidays to be given to families of military service men and women, low income families, and single parent homes. The baskets often include clothes, toys, food donations, and baby blankets. We were able to get most of the fabric we used donated by Becky Sharp's sister and the rest was purchased from Hobby Lobby, where they gave me a discount as a teacher. The kids did an amazing job with this project and they had a great time working in pairs on their blankets. All 3 grades, 6th-8th, made blankets and we were able to make 30 blankets to be donated. I will be taking the blankets in tomorrow to be donated. Hope you enjoy the pictures. Have a great day! So, as I was on Facebook I saw a virtual run for Butterfly Children, so I clicked on it. It happens that "Butterfly Children" are kids with a very painful, genetic disease where their skin is as thin as a butterfly. After watching the video, I shared it with my class. You can sign up to run a "race" anywhere, pay your fee, upload your results, and get a medal. For this race, half the fee goes to the "Butterfly Children" and the medal is a butterfly! Today 3 students and myself did 3.1 miles and will be receiving our medals shortly. One of my students did it on her Home Study day and will also receive a medal. We have also sent the information to the rest of our site. This "race" is until October 31st, but every month they have a race for a charity. I plan on doing one once a month and encouraging our students also to participate. We are running to spread good!

The Butterfly Effect
|
"I just read Jennifer's letter, and I wanted to share with you what happen on our way home from school on Thursday. My son and I stopped for a special treat for making it through the first week. On our way out a couple whom didn't speak much English stopped us and asked us for directions. They didn't really understand what I was telling them, or the map I drew for them, so I suggested that I drive to where they needed to go and they could follow me in their own car. They agreed that would work.
On our drive my son just kept saying "Well, wouldn't you know we are doing it." I said, "Doing what?" "You know the Butterfly effect, you do a nice thing for someone and it helps them out and makes a change for the better." I said "Yes, that is what we are supposed to do, help other people out if we can." I didn't think anything about it. In fact, I might have been a little annoyed that he was making such a big deal about being kind and helpful. Now I see, and I am so excited. HE GETS IT!! The Butterfly Effect! Something clicked in him and he realized what it was, the teachable moment was there for him and it made sense to him. Thank you for being a middle school where you are striving to help these young people know the value of respect and care, for other people and our world." - Email from a JCS mom |
JCS Butterfly Drop #2
Monday, August 24, 2015 - JCS Butterfly Drop #2 took place on the first day of school. Because it was so busy, we didn't even get it posted to our social media sites, but that didn't stop Cameron Byrd from netting the butterfly on the new Temecula facility! He's asked that the $250 be donated to "Sharing the Table" part of his church's mission to serve students food over the weekend who would otherwise go hungry! We're making the change one butterfly at a time! |
JCS Inaugural Butterfly Drop

Monday, August 3rd, Julian Charter School made the first move towards "teaching the change we want to see in the world." A butterfly was dropped at 11:15 a.m. and by 11:30, Ms. Betsy Balcao found the butterfly on the campus of the JCS PLC program. Betsy decided to donate the $250 to Children of the Nations, a charity where she supports a little girl and had the opportunity to travel to Malawi, Africa this summer to meet this little girl who hopes to grow up and become a teacher some day. Ms. Balcao spent a few days meeting and bonding with the children of the Chirombo village.
Betsy shared that the $250 donation to this charity would almost sponsor a child, for all of his/her needs, for a year.
This touched Ms. Tiffiny's heart. Tiffiny reached out to Betsy to see how much more it would take to sponsor a child for a whole year. Betsy replied $134. Tiffiny stood up on day two of JCS's back-to-school days and shared her desire to try and collect the additional $134 to fully fund a child. ($384 for a FULL YEAR!)
Thanks to the generosity of the JCS staff, and the "Butterfly Effect", JCS raised enough to fully fund two students through Children of the Nations for a year! Then, as an added bonus, when we went online to make the donation, Children of the Nations would double our donation, thus helping FOUR children!
Don't let the ripple effect stop here; continue flapping your wings and making a difference in the world.
YOUR LIFE MATTERS! Be the change you want to see....
